Preservation Balanced with Contemporary Design
Set within Kolkata's historic Harrington Mansion, this 5,000 sq.ft. Italian diner by Pantone Collective balances preservation with contemporary design. Retained arches and volumes are layered with striped surfaces and beaded detailing to create rhythm throughout the space.
Design Philosophy
With Beaded Rhythm, Pantone Collective explores the idea of ornament as structure—where repetition, material honesty, and color continuity become tools to bridge past and present. The project reflects the studio's broader design ethos: creating spaces that are experiential, context-driven, and deeply tactile, without relying on excess.
Materiality & Mood
Terrazzo Geometry & A Warm Palette
The in-situ terrazzo flooring anchors the space, guiding movement through its geometry. A warm palette of oxblood and terracotta, paired with subtle European-inspired murals and soft lighting, creates a refined, immersive dining experience.
Spatial Experience
Movement through the café unfolds like a sequence—arched thresholds open into intimate dining pockets, long corridors frame patterned floors, and double-height moments draw the eye upward. Lighting is deliberately warm and low, accentuating textures and enhancing the sense of nostalgia.
Art and mural interventions add a layer of storytelling, reinforcing the café's European diner inspiration while grounding it firmly within the cultural richness of Kolkata.
